Many people already know that the United States of America is among the preferred countries to live or invest in, as about 1.8 million Brazilians have already made the North American country their residence. The USA is the top country with the most Brazilians abroad, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a large part of this number immigrated attracted by professional opportunities, given the demand for qualified professionals in various fields. The unemployment rate in the USA is 3.6%, according to a report released by the Department of Labor. At the end of 2022, there were 11 million job openings available in the USA.
“To address this significant shortage of professionals, US companies are increasingly receptive to talents from other countries, including Brazil”, says Carolina Leitão, partner at International Career Transition (ICT) and business development director at Kinp Group, consultancies specializing in international careers for Brazilian professionals abroad. According to the expert, Brazilian professionals are as skilled as Americans, making them extremely competitive in seeking opportunities in the USA. “Brazilian professionals already have the advantage of speaking another language, have more academic qualifications than Americans, possess more cultural knowledge, and more ‘flexibility’, as they generally work with fewer resources in Brazil, which gives them better problem-solving skills”, she concludes.
The selection of talents in American companies has some peculiarities, although it occurs in several stages, similar to Brazil. “The selection process is quite similar: applying for positions, interviews, assessment of behavior and competencies until the job offer. But the main difference is the culture. In the USA, interviews are more objective, with punctual start and end times, questions focused on the candidate’s career results, and professional and technical skills. There are no personal questions like in Brazil, where interviewers usually want to know marital status, if you have children, age, etc. The same reasoning applies to the ‘Resume’ (curriculum vitae), which does not need to include any personal information, something common in Brazil”, explains the recruitment and selection specialist.
Regarding the bureaucracy involved in effectively moving to another country, a professional seeking an opportunity in the USA does not need to have a formalized job offer to immigrate, as their field of work may be related to a relevant activity in the eyes of the American government. To assist this professional, there is the possibility of immigration through the EB2-NIW visa granted to professionals with exceptional skills, meaning those with solid academic training and proven professional experience. The acronym NIW stands for National Interest Waiver and allows the worker to qualify for the category of visa for professionals who are of national interest, those working in areas with a shortage of qualified labor.
To avoid having the EB-2 NIW visa denied, it is advisable to hire specialized immigration consultancy for the correct completion of documentation and prerequisites.
Up-and-coming professions and immigration visas
According to the United States Department of Labor, job openings in the USA in the fields of healthcare, technology (learn more about IT professionals in the USA), engineering, aviation, and law are those most in demand for professionals and consequently offer more attractive salaries. Nurse anesthetists and doctors, for example, can earn average annual salaries of $195,000 and $208,000, respectively, while lawyers and aircraft pilots may have annual salaries in the range of $127,000 and $202,000. In some cases, however, it is necessary to be aware of the need for diploma validation or revalidation.
Another opportunity beyond work is through investment, as determined by the requirements of the EB-5 visa. Check here on the site which are the types of American visas most recommended.
Wagner Pontes, founder of D4U Immigration, an office specializing in immigration to the USA and Europe, explains that to meet the application requirements for the EB2-NIW, it is necessary to meet at least three of the seven criteria required by the US immigration department. “When eligibility conditions are met and national interest (NIW) is demonstrated, the professional assumes the great advantage and dispenses with the need for a job offer from an American employer. With this type of visa, they can immigrate to the country before being hired by a company, which can facilitate eventual employment of this professional by already being in American territory”, says the executive who offers clients, free of charge, the possibility of using headhunter services since 2020.
