Software engineer salaries in 2026 vary widely across San Jose, Miami, and Dallas. However, gross salary alone does not reveal which offer provides the best financial outcome.

Taxes, housing, equity compensation, immigration status, and the employer’s sponsorship history can substantially change the value of an offer.

How software engineer salaries work in practice

Software engineering compensation in the United States may include base salary, annual bonuses, restricted stock units, and other benefits. The proportion of each component depends on the employer and location.

San Jose generally offers the highest total compensation, especially at large technology companies that provide significant equity awards. Miami and Dallas usually offer lower nominal salaries, but neither Florida nor Texas imposes an individual state income tax.

For an H-1B or PERM case, location also matters because wage requirements are connected to the occupation, experience level, and area of intended employment. A relocation can therefore require the employer to review the Labor Condition Application, prevailing wage, or existing immigration filing.

The city itself does not determine whether a petition will be approved or processed faster. The central question is whether the position, compensation, worksite, and immigration documentation remain consistent.

Who benefits from this comparison?

An H-1B software engineer considering a move from California to Texas should compare more than rent and income tax. The employer may need to file an amended petition when the new worksite represents a material change.

A professional pursuing an employment-based green card should verify whether a new location changes the position described in the PERM application or petition.

An F-1 student on OPT should consider salary, employer eligibility, training-plan requirements, unemployment limits, and the company’s history of sponsoring H-1B workers.

Actual salaries and expenses vary according to employer, neighborhood, seniority, family size, and compensation structure.

When San Jose may be the better choice

San Jose can remain attractive when the offer includes substantial equity, strong promotion potential, and access to employers with established immigration programs.

An engineer should calculate the expected value of vesting schedules instead of comparing only base salary. A lower base salary with meaningful RSUs may outperform a higher cash-only offer over several years.

The risks include expensive housing, California income tax, and greater dependence on equity performance. An employee who leaves before shares vest may receive far less than the headline compensation figure.

When Miami may be the better choice

Miami may suit professionals working in fintech, financial services, health technology, or companies serving Latin American markets.

The absence of state individual income tax can improve take-home pay, but cost of living in Miami has increased. Housing, insurance, transportation, and hurricane-related expenses should be included in the calculation.

Miami also has fewer large-scale technology employers than the Bay Area. A professional who may need future H-1B transfers should evaluate the number of alternative sponsors in the local market.

When Dallas may be the better choice

Dallas often offers the strongest balance between salary, housing, and employer diversity. Its market includes enterprise technology, telecommunications, banking, consulting, aerospace, and defense-related companies.

The region’s comparatively affordable housing can improve purchasing power, even when the nominal salary is lower than a San Jose offer.

Texas does not impose individual state income tax, although homeowners should consider property taxes and insurance. Some defense-related positions may also require US citizenship or specific export-control eligibility.

Immigration considerations before relocating

A different worksite can affect an H-1B case when the move falls outside the geographic area covered by the existing Labor Condition Application. The employer should determine whether a new LCA and amended Form I-129 are necessary before the employee begins working at the new location.

For a PERM-based process, the area of intended employment is part of the position being tested in the labor market. A permanent relocation may require the employer and its immigration counsel to evaluate whether the existing case can continue.

An EB-2 NIW petition is not tied to a single sponsoring employer, but the professional should still demonstrate that the proposed work in the United States remains consistent with the endeavor described in the petition.

Common mistakes

The first mistake is comparing gross salaries without estimating federal and state taxes, healthcare costs, housing, and transportation.

The second is treating equity as guaranteed cash. Stock value can fluctuate, and unvested shares normally disappear when the employee leaves the company.

The third is relocating before the employer confirms the immigration consequences of the new H-1B worksite.

The fourth is assuming that a lower prevailing wage means an employer may pay below the actual market rate. The prevailing wage is a regulatory floor, not a salary recommendation.

The fifth is ignoring future mobility. A city with more established sponsors may provide greater protection if the employee later needs to change employers.

Estimated timelines and costs

An H-1B amendment or transfer may take several months through regular processing. Premium processing provides an adjudicative action within the applicable USCIS period, but it does not guarantee approval.

Moving expenses can include transportation, deposits, temporary accommodation, vehicle registration, and overlapping rent. A cross-country relocation may cost several thousand dollars.

PERM and green card timelines depend on Department of Labor processing, recruitment, USCIS adjudication, the Visa Bulletin, and the applicant’s country of chargeability. Figures should always be treated as estimates subject to change.

Next-step checklist

  1. Compare net income rather than gross salary.
  2. Separate base salary, bonus, and equity in every offer.
  3. Calculate housing, healthcare, transportation, and local taxes.
  4. Ask whether the new worksite requires an H-1B amendment.
  5. Verify how relocation could affect an active PERM process.
  6. Research the prospective employer’s sponsorship history.
  7. Confirm all immigration steps before changing your work location.

Frequently asked questions

Which city pays software engineers the most?

San Jose generally offers the highest nominal and equity-based compensation, but Dallas or Miami may provide competitive purchasing power after housing and state taxes are considered.

Does moving to another state affect an H-1B?

It can. A material change in the worksite may require a new Labor Condition Application and an amended H-1B petition.

Does the city affect PERM processing speed?

Not directly. PERM is federally administered, although the worksite affects recruitment and prevailing-wage requirements.

Can an EB-2 NIW applicant live in any of these cities?

Generally, yes. However, the applicant’s professional activity should remain consistent with the proposed endeavor presented in the petition.

Is a lower Dallas salary necessarily worse than a San Jose offer?

No. Taxes, housing, benefits, equity, and career progression may make the Dallas offer financially stronger.
